Downtown Eastside future development plan gets its first airing: a rental-only district; a goal to get low-cost grocers into the hood; lots of “a variety of new housing forms encouraged”

July 19th, 2013 · 32 Comments

Okay, now it’s the the Downtown Eastside’s turn at the “emerging directions” for their area plan — the last of the four neighbourhoods that are getting new visions for development and services. The open house was yesterday, another one Saturday. Lots in there. (Here is the link to the city’s information boards.) A few of […]

The new Rize, um, MountPleasant2014 tower: What do you think?

July 19th, 2013 · 40 Comments

I didn’t have a chance to go to the open house. (Big project, still in a post-vacation funk, etc.) Rize/MP2014 doing an energetic job of tweeting out how they addressed all the city demands for changes. The building certainly looks better. But, as I say, I didn’t see it up close. Your thoughts?

The promise of a new approach is damaged after sneak towers appear in Commercial Drive plan

July 16th, 2013 · 50 Comments

As I say in this story in the Globe and Mail, which comes in at the tail end of a debate that Frank Ducote introduced us to a little over a month ago, many observers in the community thought that the city was going to do things differently when it adopted a go-slow approach to […]

Mayor’s house has sold for asking: Vancouver real-estate stocks soar

July 12th, 2013 · 42 Comments

Okay, this is Friday fluff, but whatever. I feel I must contribute to the ongoing deep investigations into Mayor Gregor Robertson’s change of abode by reporting that his Douglas Park-area house has apparently sold, for the asking price of whatever it was, $1.95 million or something. I realize that where the mayor lives is significant. […]

Madrid: The city that doesn’t cycle

July 12th, 2013 · 15 Comments

Whenever I go to Europe (if that doesn’t sound obnoxious), I’m always struck by the way the mythological view of it doesn’t match the reality. In conversations among urbanists, amateur and professional, here, European cities are always treated as though they have achieved the highest level of excellent city operation. They are walkable. They encourage […]

How the election was won and lost: An inside look

July 12th, 2013 · 7 Comments

Granville and Robson have been closed to all traffic. Granville had been closed before due to the Canada line construction, and bus were using dedicated lane […]
