For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, this cartoon from the latest New Yorker captures current planning at its best, don’t you think?

How droll.
I hope the Vancouver elected representatives and the professional planners have a sense of humour and can laugh at themselves (not an attribute widely shared among elected representatives).
Great cartoon.

That’s a Sidney Harris cartoon! high on the popularity charts with scientists for ones in American Scientist, older Current Contents Weekly and many other places. Many funny books too (“I’ll show you proof”, “What’s So Funny About Science?: Cartoons, ” “You Want Proof? I’ll Give You Proof”
(about 200 entries on abebooks.com)
Far too much joy at http://www.sciencecartoonsplus.com/index.php
and a brief bio at http://www.sigmaxi.org/programs/prizes/honor.harris.shtml for which he contributes about 3 to 4 cartoons a week.
Ah, where is Norris, Krieger, Aislin, Giles, Low and other one-panelists?

Looks a lot like Granville Island, no?

Could someone draw the Vancouver version?
– drop the steel mill
– put the rest atop a container terminal (along with a soccer stadium if you so choose).

The Vancouver version would also include an ill-placed basketball hoop, dumpy public art, three spindly trees, a few salvaged heritage details with no architechtural context, and lots of toys dogs peeing on everything.

Jack,
“dumpy public art”
A bunch of stop signs maybe?
