Okay, before you sent the angry comments, I know that COPE is full of life, brimming over with passionate policy advocates and their ideas on how to end inequality in this city.
But I meant back to life on council, school board and park board.
Anyway, here’s the job posting.
In the leadup to the November civic election, the Coalition of Progressive Electors is hiring a full-time Organizer. The organizer will be responsible for COPE’s on-the-ground campaign.
COPE’s Executive Director Sean Antrim said: “Two weeks ago, our members got together and adopted policy to build real affordable housing, protect renters, eliminate transit fares, and make Vancouver a Sanctuary City. We’re going to beat the real-estate backed parties by knocking on doors and talking about these policies.”
A job posting is available on the COPE website at http://cope.bc.ca/work-for-
cope/ Applications will be accepted until 10:00am on May 5th.

What the heck does “racialized” mean? That’s a new one for me.

Ability t0 speak and write in Spanish? I didn’t realize that ability was in such high demand in Vancouver. Whilst French is excluded from the second language list.

According to the 2011 census basically no one speaks French as their main language in Vancouver. Spanish makes the top 1o though.

I mean no disrepect, but after reading the job description, they seem to be setting themselves up as a fringe group versus a true contender.
Vancouver a ‘Sancutary City’???

Seems to me the only people left at COPE are the extreme fringe. I expect them to be an utter non-factor in the election.

COPE is so far off the rails its not funny. You have to wonder if Vision’s backroom boys engineered Louis’ rise.

Yikes… talk about uninformed comments…

Educate yourself.
2rph:
Spanish, Chinese, urdu etc are much more valuable than French in Vancouver
4teririch: Sanctuary City is actually one of the best policies a city can institute with respect to migrant justice- and the economy. The leading global cities have already proclaimed themselves Sanctuary Cities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctuary_city
Temporary foreign workers is one of the hottest issues now- Vancouver has a large amount of non-status workers that would benefit from Sanctuary city- Next time you ask yourself how this city is run- ask yourself which non-status worker-migrants are helping to directly get that job done- or indirectly by helping a privileged person take time off from rearing their own children etc.
I agree that COPE doesn’t have mass appeal and I lament about how they should have re-branded themselves a long time ago- but I applaud the fact that they are addressing some of the most important issues to date.

The reactions to Frances Bula’s posting on the COPE job posting are excessively upsetting.
1) “Racialization” is the process of imbuing race, ascribing racial characteristics and producing difference between Whiteness (White Supremacy) and the “racialized” (a denigrated/ dehumanized status in relation).
2) Chinese, Tagalog, Punjabi, Urdu and Spanish are FAR more prominent in Vancouver than French.
3) Sanctuary City is actually one of the best policies a city can institute with respect to migrant justice- and the economy. The leading global cities have already proclaimed themselves Sanctuary Cities.
The issue of Temporary foreign workers is one of the hottest issues now (i.e. McDonalds)- Vancouver has a large amount of non-status workers that would benefit from Sanctuary city- Next time you ask yourself how this city is run- ask yourself which non-status worker-migrants are helping to directly get that job done- or indirectly by helping a privileged person take time off from rearing their own children etc.

Melissa F @7
Did you even give it a minute, to think it over, before writing that ratatouille of yours? just curious. Politics are not your forte, hon!
10 Melissa Fong aka @InternationalMF // Apr 21, 2014 at 4:43 pm
@Terry M
Political reality is obviously not your forte, son.
I could pull out the statistics but you’re obviously trolling.

Yes Melissa Fong, every time I dope by the BMW Store on Burard or stroll the streets of Kerrisdale cum Kowloon I’m struck.by the plight of those poor racialized Non-whites.
Your perfect for the COPE job as your ideology is as firmly rooted in the last century as theirs.

@Terry_M
I just wonder how much it costs to provide an education that equips individuals to write this stuff.

Nah, for your real tendentious screed you should be trying to decode the academic cant at The Mainlander (where International MF — a handle that makes me smile — also posts occasionally)
