The man at the side of Vancouver’s new mayor: Joel Solomon

May 26th, 2009 · 3 Comments

My latest column in Vancouver magazine features Joel Solomon, the man who is having a huge influence on the green-business culture of this city. He’s also one of the mayor’s closest allies and a fascinating blend of entrepreneur, philanthropist and philosopher. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t people in town who are uneasy about him […]

Our twin city also takes road spaces away from cars

May 25th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Toronto and Vancouver are turning into the Club of Two these days, with a pair of reform-minded, green-focused mayors who have several links between their offices, via staff and political organizers. I recommend that anyone who wants to know what Vancouver or Toronto might be doing next keep an eye on what their alter egos […]

City manager poem, many jokes to send off Vancouver’s housing director

May 14th, 2009 · 3 Comments

In the steady march of the 60s generation out of city hall doors the last couple of years, two more left or are leaving this month. One was Trish French, the scarily smart senior planner who terrified more than one councillor, I am positive, with her incisive answers to their wandering questions. Her last day […]

Peter Ladner’s impressions of Cuba: great health, services, crippled economy

May 8th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Our two-term councillor and recent mayoral candidate went to Cuba for the 50th anniversary of La Revolucion — a return trip after a visit in 1970, where Peter Ladner had the dubious pleasure of staying in the same hotel as FLQ refugees, if I’m recalling the story he told me correctly. Always great to get […]

Vancouver green plan not about being your nanny

May 5th, 2009 · 6 Comments

One of the aims of the city’s plan for becoming the Most Greenest City, though it wasn’t spelled out anywhere, was not to moralize about how everyone should be a better environmental person. To that end, they focused on incentives and opportunities rather than scolding and penalties, as I note in my Globe story here.

Full text quotes: Gregor Robertson, Suzanne Anton, James Ridge

Because this topic seems to be generating a lot of controversy, I will do a bit of notebook dumping here to give everyone all the evidence available before they come to a verdict.  And then we can move on to other things.

Mayor’s comments about departing bureaucrats rile many

April 28th, 2009 · 32 Comments

Mayor Gregor Robertson’s comments that city hall bureaucrats are leaving because they can’t handle the pace of his aggressive agenda are really kicking up a s**storm. The comments, for those who haven’t seen them, are in Jeff Lee’s story in the Sun here and the mayor said substantially the same thing to me, which will […]

Idea camp for rental housing prompts many suggestions and many questions

April 26th, 2009 · 22 Comments

It was quite the scene at the stunning new Celebration Hall in Mountain View cemetery Saturday — I definitely want to be buried there now with the great views and lovely, modernist new hall for all my friends to party at when they send me on my way — as developers, architects, and housing advocates […]

The future of Vancouver’s downtown decided

April 22nd, 2009 · 32 Comments

While many of you were watching a couple of hockey teams face off on Tuesday night, there were two other teams facing off at city council over an issue that is key to what kind of city people think Vancouver is about: how much housing should be allowed downtown and how much of the downtown […]

Mayors push for carbon-tax money to fund transit

April 21st, 2009 · 34 Comments

Faced with mounting bills at TransLink and no way of paying them except to keep going back to transit fares and property taxes, the region’s mayors have decided to make transit funding a campaign issue. They’re holding their (required) in-camera meeting tomorrow to talk about their plan to ask for some of the millions in […]
