The media briefing started just a few minutes ago but a little bird sent me a message last night saying that VANOC will not use a transponder system to try to deal with the traffic up to Whistler during the Olympics.
The highway is potentially one of their main traffic nightmares, since they will be trying to prevent anyone without a guaranteed parking spot from going up the road, but they’ll need to let through the many residents of Whistler, Pemberton and more to their homes.
I’ve heard from a couple of sources that the transportation planning got started late and is a bit of a nightmare generally. As a result, by the time things got organized, it was too late to think about putting in a transponder system. But then what will they do? Stopping all cars to check for passes seems like a traffic nightmare.

It never fails to astound me that people who have years to take care of issues get caught short for time…what are they having for breakfast – seconal?

The BC Government is probably preparing a law that will prohibit residents between Horseshoe Bay and Lillooet from leaving their homes during the period.

But how many of these measures will be retained after the events are over?
I have an uneasy feeling that the traffic planners have an agenda for more than the 2010 events and may try all sorts of traffic options after the event — options that they would not dare suggest in normal times.

at first i was neutral about it and wished them well nonetheless, but i am now totally against the 2010 event. i wash my hands of them. the games are fraught with undemocratic consequences. and the costs of security for a one month party are obscene and total madness…
