And, in one new little bit of news, Vision decided on how many candidates it will run in the  election, now that it is no longer partnering with COPE. This is the message I got in their email newsletter. (Strangely, even though I have signed up for NPA newsletters as well, I don’t get nearly as many emails telling me all about the party’s great plans as I do from Vision. What’s with that?) For those not good with the math, that means they will run one more candidate than the number of council members they now have and one more school board candidate than their current complement. The number of candidates for park board will remain the same, but this level is generating the most interest because four of the current park-board commissioners for Vision are not running again, which leaves a lot of openings.

Frances —

Last night, the Vision Vancouver executive decided how many candidates we will run in November’s election.

I want you to be the first to know. In November, Vision will run:

8 candidates for City Council.
7 candidates for School Board.
5 candidates for Park Board.

This will ensure we’re putting forward an energetic and experienced slate of candidates at all three levels, in what will be a tough election campaign against the NPA this year.

We need to keep moving Vancouver forward and re-elect progressive majorities for City Council, Park Board and School Board. We can’t risk going backwards with the NPA – a party that opposes the Greenest City Action Plan, voted against new housing for the homeless, and won’t stand up against a massive expansion of oil tankers in our harbour.

The first step towards determining our candidates is this Sunday’s Leadership Review at our AGM, where you will have your say on the Vision incumbents who are seeking re-election. We’ll also be updating members on our preparations for the November election, and offer new ways to get involved.

Will I see you on Sunday?

Well, the great combatants are about to enter the arena yet again.

NPA, who were at the wheel for all my time in the city (1951-97) will enter armed with the assumption of their God given right. Vision will spend millions to paste over their dismal record, after starting out with so much hope (and sulk as they just scrape by). The working man’s COPE will assume, incorrectly, working men and women of the city have their back! And Greens will valiantly soldier on because destiny is theirs (although somebody should tell destiny)!

Millions will be spent on what is essentially legalized corruption, Microsofts 400 new employees will dwindle to a few dozen, if that, that architect who boasts his four horsemen of the apocalypse are “a model for sustainability” will come to realize sustainability comes in glass jars and inevitability all that talk will be just talk as everyone scrambles to pick up the pieces: and after all the hoopla what was it the lady said, “it’s turtles all the way down“.

I know this is ‘doily pushing’… but why use a photo of MLA & AG Suzanne Anton with the NPA article. She is no longer part of the NPA and hasn’t been for some time ow.

It would have made mores sense to use Afflack and Ball.

PS errata “NPA“, and TEAM, “who were at the wheel for all my time . . .“

Whoever gets it, need to put an end to this type of crap, once and for all.

This is just heart-breaking. How can a house on the heritage list be sold off to a developer for demolishing? Vancouver is losing it’s heritage thru the stupidy of reed and profit. ]

Thanks Vision for your truly short sightedness.

    Ms. Richardson@ #2.
You gave me a chuckle as I am unsure whether you are referring to the Aflac duck, Ben Affleck the actor or Councillor Affleck, the erstwhile NPA candidate for mayor.
Anyway, you should know how to spell your party’s candidates names. LOL

Not too sure we can blame the lack of heritage protection on Vision in particular, Teri.

People have been tearing down heritage homes here since the first settlers tore down the native longhouses.

And I think from the municipal government’s prospective it’s kind of damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’m sure if greater heritage protections were put into place you could find people on this very blog saying “those meddling social engineering socialists need to stay out of private business!”

And now that I’ve spent the time to type this up, I think I’ve overcooked my lunch! Thanks a lot… GREGOR.

    @Mark A
We certainly can blame Vision for this particular heritage debacle. They refused to grant a density bonus to save the house. An odd decision as they have not been reticent about grating other developers density for new projects without any heritage component. They then decided to save a tree rather than the house. Tress grow back, heritage mansions, not so much.

One may like things Vision has done in other fields, but their record in heritage preservation is extremely poor.

Is it just me or is there an unusual lack of developers on that list? Looks like the condo barons have decided Vision Vancouver has the best politicians money can buy.

“the first settlers tore down the native longhouses”. Source, please.

vancouver could have a stock exchange if it was devoted just to condo day trading , if any city could do it, its Vancouver

    Right on!
    Teri @4
Of course this one is on Vision Vancouver. Who’s been in office for the past 6 years?
And the finger pointing goes on… Thanks… GREGOR lol!

His Worship today made clear the central theme of the campaign: NPA=angry old white men; Vision=smiling middle-aged white men. Take your pick.

Teri richardson, what does demolishing a house have to do with who is running in the next election and who funds them?

  • 18 Terry M // May 6, 2014 at 10:35 am

    @teririch 14
Wow, that Toderian guy is such a self serving a-hole! What’s the difference between his arrogant “this is not a debate” and clowncillor Meggs “consultation was the election, this is the delivery” ? None! Good they laid him off! As for DCM Sadhu, I can’t believe we’re paying this guy. A window store mannequin looks more active and useful than he does. Sheesh.

  • 19 Roger Kemble // May 6, 2014 at 11:38 am

    Terry M @ #16

    +1

  • 20 brilliant // May 6, 2014 at 2:33 pm

@Terry M-maybe someone should call the Feds to see if Sadhu has a temporary foreign worker permit. There weren’t enough Canadian Vision syncophants to fill the job?!

Note to progressives recoiling in horror:I’m fully aware Sadhu is American.

  • 21 Jeff Leigh // May 7, 2014 at 3:49 pm

    @brilliant #20

“I’m fully aware Sadhu is American”

Maybe not as aware as you think you are. The Globe and Mail reported on his dual (including Canadian) citizenship when he was hired. Do you know differently?

  • 22 gman // May 7, 2014 at 5:41 pm

The Mayor did an interview on the state broadcaster yesterday, the interview starts at 2:11:20,and he blathers on with the usual talking points until the last tough question at 2:20:40…..oops…..hello…..hello…?

    Just too funny for words.

  • 24 teririch // May 8, 2014 at 8:49 am

Seems the list of the Vision donators, supporters, insiders benefiting from what is now dubbed the ‘Golden Mile’ bike lane is growing:

Enter Mike Harcourt, Justen Harcourt and Peter Wall:

    http://www.theprovince.com/news/Point+Grey+Road+becomes+road+riches+Harcourts/9812712/story.html

  • 25 chow // May 8, 2014 at 9:59 am

Ah, teririchardson, slime away. If you read the article, the properties were purchased before the decision was made.
If you (or the NPA propaganda machine called the Province) have knowledge that the Harcourts or Wall or anybody else had inside knowledge of something going to happen, then share it.
Otherwise, fortunes are made (and lost) on speculating on what may happen and acting accordingly.
The fact remains that that area has always been a desirable area. It may be more desirable now. However, unless you can show me evidence that any of these people had inside knowledge or that City Council acted expressly to benefit their supporters, it is just bleating from the peanut gallery.
